Rabindranath Tagore is the most famous Bengali modern poet and one of the, if not Bengal’s greatest cultural icons. Tagore was a poet, prose writer, composer, painter, essayist, philosopher, educationist, social reformer and the first non-European to be honoured with the Nobel Prize.
Tagore's genius was his use of the Bengali language, his musician's ear caught natural rhythms and his free mind paid little attention to classical rules of poetry. The forms he created were fresh and anew yet those were built upon the sentiment of India, a philosophical amalgamation of millennia.
Rabindranath's achievement as a writer can only be viewed correctly in the context of his whole life because his thoughts and poetics underwent modifications as he moved from one phase of his life to another.
