The Victoria Memorial is an iconic monument representing the resplendent and majestic British architecture, with its iconic dome, octagonal-domed chhatris, terrace, high portals, and domed corner towers. The marble beauty of Kolkata was conceived in 1901 by Lord Curzon, the then Viceroy of India to honor the late Queen Victoria as well as to serve as a "Valhalla of the Indian Empire." The then-Prince of Wales (later King Edward VIII) inaugurated it on December 28, 1921, during his royal tour of India.

The edifice, which is frequently used as a representation of Kolkata in films, television series, and advertisements, was designed by William Emerson, the chief architect, with input from the supervising architect, Vincent Jerome Esch.
