The charminar smoking quintessential Bengali sleuth, Prodosh Chandra Mitter, known by Feluda, first appeared in 1965 in the Bengali children’s magazine Sandesh. Feluda, like his influencer Sherlock Holmes, depends on his didactic method and profound knowledge but at the same time beholds the family ethics amid social milieu.

His adolescent sidekick Topshe, the narrator of the stories provides a juvenile point of view while thriller writer Lalmohan Ganguly a.k.a. Jatayu, their constant companion, gives almost a comical aura with his typical Bengali ‘bhodrolok’ characteristics.

With their presence, Feluda, the tall, reserved, sharp, reticent yet with profound humor and affinity to perfection, appears as almost opposite-image of a typical middleclass Bengali that made him favourite to children and adults alike over half a century.
